Introduction

While vinyl and brick are the most prevalent types of siding used in Michigan today, the use of engineered wood composite siding is growing because it offers homeowners many advantages. Durability, performance and attractive appearance of wood composite siding allow it to be used in a wide variety of building applications. Wood composite siding is available in many configurations, including lap siding, panel siding, soffit, trim and fascia.

One type of wood composite siding approved for use in Michigan under NER-124 is SmartSide™ lap, panel, trim and soffit siding and exterior products from Louisiana Pacific.

This engineered wood exterior product is manufactured by treating geometrically shaped wood strands with zinc-borates. Then they are chemically and physically bonded using phenolic resins and patented primer saturated overlay. The substrate is embossed with a cedar grain texture or smooth surface. The manufacturer seals the edges to increase moisture resistance and durability in the field.
