Introduction

As homes become more energy efficient and airtight, the importance of proper ventilation also increases. Ventilation is critical to ensure both the health of a home's occupants and the health of the structure itself.

A well-designed and properly installed ventilation system:

  • Improves indoor air quality
  • Reduces mold, mildew and other moisture problems
  • Reduces levels of indoor air pollutants by improving general air circulation
  • Improves general health of the home's occupants by reducing incidences of asthma and other respiratory problems

There are two types of ventilation systems:

  • Continuous ventilation, sometimes referred to as controlled, central or whole-house systems, which circulates air throughout the entire home
  • Intermittent or spot ventilation, typically installed in kitchens and baths to reduce moisture and odors

Ventilation fans that operate with a continuous run time motor and those that are quiet and energy efficient are more likely to be used by the home's occupants, and therefore are most likely to provide the desired airflow.
