Introduction
Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs) provide Michigan builders with an energy-efficient alternative to stud framing for walls, floors and ceilings. SIPs are constructed of a rigid foam core sandwiched between two structural wood panels, typically plywood or oriented strand board (OSB). They are used in structural building systems that can be pre-fabricated under strict quality control standards and then quickly assembled on site.
SIPs have been code-approved since the early 1960's, but Michigan code officials have seen a recent increase in the number of specifications. As more specifiers and builders recognize the energy efficiency, strength, durability and cost effective benefits of SIPs, specifications should continue to increase.
